Lagotto Research Projects

To date there are only few research projects that focus specifically on the Lagotto Romagnolo and all of the studies are conducted in Europe.  The Lagotto Romagnolo is still a very rare breed in the United States but our plan is to learn from other countries where the popularity of this breed has grown in a very short time.

The current state of our breed in this country has made us aware that we want to be proactive as it continues to gain in popularity. It is one of the oldest breeds in the world, with a working history and we don’t want the breed to become the next “fashionable” dog with all of the health, temperament and poor breeding issues that so many other breeds gaining quick popularity have suffered.

The Lagotto Romagnolo is a healthy and rustic working dog. We will support any effort to keep the breed that way. Healthy, stable and long-living.

Genoscoper Laboratories in Finland was the first laboratory in the world to introduce a canine genome-wide, panel-testing method that combines disease gene testing with advanced genetic diversity measurement. Since so many Lagotti live in Scandinavia, they also focused very early on this breed.  The database of tested Lagotti can be found here www.mydogdna.com

Genoscoper partnered with Mars Veterinary to provide genome testing in the U.S.. Mars Veterinary is a business unit of Mars Petcare, the U.S. operations of the world's largest pet care company at the privately-held Mars, Incorporated.

The University of Bern, Institute of Genetic and Department Clinical Research and Veterinary Public Health (DCR-VPH) is another institute that focused very early on our breed. They conducted multicenter studies together with Genoscoper on Lysosomal Storage Disease (LSD) for instance that affects many Lagotti.

U.S. based research institutes are just starting to recognize the Lagotto Romagnolo as potential breed with genetic related issues due to the still small numbers of dogs in this country. However, we would like to support more research in the U.S. and encourage canine research institutes in the U.S. to collaborate with us toward this goal.

With our fundraisers, each year we will support research institutes that focus on health issues that can relate to the Lagotto Romagnolo. We work with a Scientific Advisory Board that makes recommendations on whom to support and why. We will publish the decision made by the end of the year on our webpage and Facebook page.
